A study of horses in an Algerian pasture by the Italian Orientalist painter Alberto Pasini, capturing the atmospheric light of the region.
Alberto Pasini was an Italian painter known for his detailed observations of the Middle East and North Africa. This work, titled Paardenweide in Algerië, captures a quiet moment in an Algerian pasture. The composition focuses on a group of horses grazing in an open field, with palm trees and rolling hills visible in the distance. The sky occupies a large portion of the frame, rendered with soft, atmospheric light that suggests the heat of the region.
Pasini travelled extensively throughout the Ottoman Empire, Persia, and North Africa during the mid-nineteenth century. His approach to these subjects differed from many of his contemporaries, as he prioritised architectural precision and natural light over the dramatic, often fabricated narratives common in Orientalist art. He utilised a refined palette to convey the specific quality of light found in these climates, balancing the earthy tones of the terrain with the pale blues of the horizon.
The physical condition of this specific canvas shows significant wear, including tears and surface degradation. These marks of age provide a unique perspective on the history of the object, revealing the layers of the painting and the texture of the support. Despite the damage, the original intent of the artist remains visible in the delicate brushwork of the horses and the subtle gradation of the sky. This print captures the work in its current state, preserving the aesthetic tension between the original composition and the passage of time. It offers an opportunity to observe the technical skill of Pasini, whose ability to render space and light remains clear even through the visible signs of decay. The work functions as a study of light and atmosphere, documenting a specific geographical setting through the lens of a nineteenth-century European traveller.
