Beskrivning
A classic example of Jean Arp's biomorphic abstraction, this relief features fluid, organic shapes in blue and black.
Jean Arp, a founding member of the Dada movement, created this work during a period of intense experimentation with biomorphic abstraction. The composition consists of painted wooden elements mounted on a base, a technique Arp utilised to move beyond the constraints of traditional painting. By employing organic, fluid shapes, he sought to mirror the processes of nature rather than represent specific objects in a literal sense.
The title, Overturned Blue Shoe With Two Heels Under a Black Vault, provides a linguistic anchor for an otherwise non-representational image. Arp often used titles to invite viewers into a playful, associative relationship with his forms. The blue, amoeba-like shape occupies the centre of the composition, positioned beneath a dark, arching form that suggests the titular vault. The contrast between the saturated blue and the stark black against a neutral background creates a sense of spatial tension, despite the flat application of colour.
Arp rejected the rigid geometry favoured by many of his contemporaries, preferring forms that appeared to grow or shift. This relief demonstrates his interest in the relationship between chance and deliberate construction. The smooth, rounded edges of the wooden cut-outs suggest a tactile quality, encouraging the eye to follow the curves of the forms. This work is characteristic of Arp's mid-1920s output, where he refined his visual vocabulary to focus on balance, simplicity, and the interplay of positive and negative space. It remains an example of his ability to imbue abstract shapes with a sense of character and movement, challenging the viewer to find meaning within the ambiguity of the forms.
