A traditional ink-on-silk painting by Kwon Dong-yu, featuring bamboo and orchids growing from a cliff, reflecting the literati style of the Joseon Dynasty.
This hanging scroll, executed in ink on silk, represents the tradition of literati painting within the Joseon Dynasty. The composition focuses on a vertical rock formation, rendered with subtle ink washes that suggest mass and texture without relying on heavy outlines. From the upper reaches of the cliff, bamboo stalks emerge, their leaves depicted with swift, decisive brushwork. Below, orchids grow from the rock face, their long, sweeping leaves providing a counterpoint to the rigid structure of the stone.
The work adheres to the Four Gracious Plants motif, a subject central to the education and moral cultivation of the scholar-official class. Bamboo signifies resilience and integrity, while the orchid represents modesty and refinement. The artist, Kwon Dong-yu, employs a restrained palette, utilising the tonal variations of black ink to create depth and atmosphere. The negative space surrounding the cliff serves to isolate the subjects, directing the viewer's attention to the interplay between the organic forms and the geological element.
Calligraphic inscriptions appear in the upper right quadrant, integrated into the overall design. These characters provide context and demonstrate the artist's proficiency in both painting and poetry, a hallmark of the literati tradition. The silk support has aged to a warm, muted tone, which softens the contrast between the ink and the background.
