A detailed etching of an elderly woman with clasped hands, demonstrating fine line work and dramatic use of shadow.
This etching by the Dutch artist Jacobus Ludovicus Cornet captures an elderly woman in a moment of quiet contemplation. The composition focuses on the subject from the chest up, with her hands clasped together in a gesture of prayer or reflection. Cornet employs a dark, atmospheric background that pushes the figure forward, drawing the viewer's attention to the texture of her skin and the folds of her clothing.
The artist demonstrates a high level of technical skill in his use of line work. The etching process allows for fine, cross-hatched marks that define the deep wrinkles on the woman's face and the delicate lace of her collar. Her expression is one of calm, with her gaze directed slightly upward and away from the viewer. The contrast between the light hitting her face and the deep shadows surrounding her creates a sense of volume and physical presence.
Cornet was active in the mid-nineteenth century, a period when Dutch printmaking often looked back to the traditions of the seventeenth-century masters. This work reflects that interest in character studies and the realistic depiction of age. The attention to detail in the hands, which show the signs of time, adds a layer of human vulnerability to the portrait. The print is executed with a monochromatic palette, relying entirely on the density of the etched lines to create tonal variation. It is a study of light, shadow, and human character, presented with a restraint that avoids sentimentality. The work remains a fine example of nineteenth-century Dutch graphic art, demonstrating the capacity of the etching medium to convey texture and mood through precise, deliberate mark-making.
