A page of elegant cursive calligraphy from the Ōson gafu, a woodblock-printed album by the Japanese Rinpa master Sakai Hōitsu.
This print originates from the Ōson gafu, a collection of works by the Edo-period artist Sakai Hōitsu. Hōitsu was a central figure in the revival of the Rinpa school, a movement known for its decorative aesthetic and connection to the classical traditions of Kyoto. While Hōitsu is often recognised for his paintings of flora and fauna, his contributions to the woodblock-printed book format demonstrate his mastery of brushwork and composition.
The image displays a page of text rendered in fluid, cursive Japanese script. The characters exhibit a rhythmic quality, characteristic of the calligraphic styles favoured by the literati of the period. The ink work is precise, showing the controlled pressure of the brush against the paper. The layout is balanced, with the text contained within a simple rectangular border, a common feature in Japanese printed books of the nineteenth century. This page serves as a record of the artistic and literary culture of the time, reflecting the integration of visual art and written word.
Sakai Hōitsu was born into the Sakai clan, a family of high-ranking daimyo. His transition from a life of privilege to one of artistic pursuit allowed him to study under various masters before establishing his own approach to the Rinpa style. The Ōson gafu acts as a catalogue of his aesthetic vision, capturing the elegance and restraint that defined his career. The print provides a window into the technical capabilities of Edo-period printing, where the subtle variations in ink density were carefully preserved to maintain the integrity of the original calligraphy. This piece is suitable for those interested in the history of Japanese printing and the development of the Rinpa school.
