A classical Baroque masterpiece by Nicolas Poussin, depicting the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice within a structured, serene Roman-inspired setting.
Nicolas Poussin painted Orpheus and Eurydice around 1650-1653. The work depicts a scene from Ovid's Metamorphoses, where Orpheus plays his lyre near a river while Eurydice gathers flowers. In the background, the serpent that causes her death remains hidden, yet the presence of the smoke rising from the distant Castel Sant'Angelo, anachronistically placed in the Roman setting, introduces a sense of foreboding.
Poussin constructs the composition with a rigorous sense of order. The figures are grouped in the foreground, acting as a bridge between the viewer and the expansive, structured environment. The trees frame the scene on either side, creating a natural proscenium that directs the eye toward the middle ground. The light is clear and even, typical of Poussin's approach to classical subjects, where the emotional weight is carried by the arrangement of forms rather than dramatic chiaroscuro.
The painting reflects the artist's interest in the relationship between human action and the natural world. The calm, almost detached atmosphere contrasts with the tragic narrative of the myth. Poussin uses a palette of muted earth tones, greens, and ochres, punctuated by the red drapery of the figures. This work is held in the collection of the Musée du Louvre in Paris.
