A 1549 engraving by Monogrammist IG featuring a symmetrical winged figure integrated into scrolling acanthus foliage and grotesque motifs.
This engraving, dated 1549, belongs to the tradition of ornamental prints produced in the sixteenth century. These works were often created as source material for craftsmen, including goldsmiths, woodcarvers, and metalworkers, who required patterns for decorative commissions. The composition displays a high degree of symmetry, typical of the period, featuring a central winged figure that merges into scrolling acanthus foliage.
The design is structured around a vertical axis, with the central figure at the top providing a clear anchor for the surrounding vegetal forms. Below this, the composition branches out into elaborate scrolls and leaf motifs, which curl into circular shapes. The artist has used hatching to create depth and shadow, giving the flat surface a sense of relief. Two smaller faces are integrated into the lower scrolls, a common feature in grotesque or ornamental designs of the era, where human and plant forms often blend.
Monogrammist IG, active in the mid-sixteenth century, demonstrates a technical proficiency in the use of the burin. The lines are precise, allowing for the clear definition of the foliage and the facial features of the figures. The background is filled with fine horizontal lines, a technique that helps the lighter, unshaded areas of the ornament stand out. This print serves as a record of the aesthetic preferences of the time, where the fusion of classical motifs and imaginative, hybrid creatures defined the decorative arts. It is a clear example of the period's interest in formal balance and the stylisation of natural elements for functional design purposes.
