This engraving by the anonymous Netherlandish artist known as Meester FVB (Master of the Flower Border) displays the technical precision characteristic of late fifteenth-century printmaking. The composition is dominated by a dense, rhythmic arrangement of hop vines, which curl and twist across the rectangular frame. The artist employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the volume of the leaves and the texture of the hop cones, creating a sense of depth despite the essentially two-dimensional nature of the design.
Meester FVB is identified by the monogram FVB, which appears on several works from this period. This particular print belongs to a genre of ornamental engravings that were produced for use by craftsmen, such as goldsmiths, woodcarvers, or embroiderers, who required patterns for their own decorative work. The fluid, calligraphic lines of the stems contrast with the more structured, serrated edges of the foliage, demonstrating a high level of control over the burin.
