A detailed Dutch Mannerist engraving depicting a personified figure of War, set against a backdrop of a sprawling battlefield.
This engraving, titled Oorlog (War), is a characteristic example of Northern Mannerist printmaking. Executed by Zacharias Dolendo after a design by Jacques de Gheyn II, the work presents a personification of War as a muscular, armoured figure. The central character stands in a dynamic, contrapposto pose, clutching a shield and sword, embodying the aggressive nature of conflict. The figure is adorned with elaborate, decorative armour and flowing drapery, typical of the period's preference for stylised, elongated forms.
In the background, a sprawling battlefield unfolds, featuring military encampments, distant fortifications, and small figures engaged in combat. The contrast between the monumental, foregrounded allegorical figure and the miniature, chaotic scene behind creates a sense of scale often found in late sixteenth-century Dutch prints. The composition is framed by a Latin inscription at the base, which provides a moralising context for the image, linking the personification of envy and discord to the horrors of war.
The technical execution demonstrates the precision of the burin, with fine hatching used to model the musculature of the figure and the texture of the metal armour. The print reflects the intellectual climate of the Netherlands during the Eighty Years' War, where classical allegory was frequently employed to comment on contemporary political and military instability. This piece serves as a record of the aesthetic values of the period, prioritising complex poses and detailed narrative elements within a single frame. The work is part of a series that explores various allegorical themes, demonstrating the collaborative nature of print production between designers and engravers in the late sixteenth century.
