A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Urs Graf the Elder, depicting a figure from the biblical parable of the foolish virgins.
This engraving by Urs Graf the Elder depicts a figure from the biblical parable of the ten virgins. Graf, a Swiss artist active in the early sixteenth century, was known for his work as a goldsmith, mercenary, and printmaker. His style often incorporates a sharp, linear quality that reflects his training in metalwork. The figure is shown in a half-length portrait, holding a vessel associated with the narrative of the foolish virgins who failed to prepare for the bridegroom.
The composition is defined by the artist's use of hatching and cross-hatching to create volume and shadow. The drapery of the bodice and the folds of the headpiece demonstrate the technical precision common in Northern Renaissance printmaking. Graf includes his monogram, VG, on either side of the figure, a standard practice for identifying his prints. The expression of the subject is direct, capturing a moment of quiet contemplation rather than overt narrative action.
Graf's work often occupies a space between the religious themes of his era and a more secular, sometimes gritty, observation of human character. This print is part of a series that explores the parable through individual character studies. The focus remains on the physical form and the texture of the clothing, rendered with a clarity that allows the viewer to examine the artist's technique. The monochromatic nature of the engraving emphasises the interplay of light and shadow across the subject's face and attire. This piece offers a glimpse into the print culture of the early sixteenth century, where such works were circulated among collectors and fellow artists. It remains a clear example of the graphic output of the Swiss Renaissance, demonstrating the technical skill required to produce such detailed work on metal plates.
