A traditional zenga ink painting by Isshi Bunshu, depicting the Chan master Chü-chih and his iconic one-finger gesture.
This work by the Japanese monk and artist Isshi Bunshu depicts the legendary Chan master Chü-chih. The composition follows the traditional zenga format, pairing a simplified ink figure with a calligraphic inscription. The artist employs a minimalist approach, using sparse, fluid brushstrokes to capture the essence of the monk. The figure is seated in a meditative posture, with one finger raised, referencing the famous kōan where Chü-chih would answer any question about the nature of reality by simply holding up a single finger.
The ink application is deliberate and economical. Isshi Bunshu avoids unnecessary detail, focusing instead on the weight and rhythm of the brush. The surrounding calligraphy provides the textual context for the visual representation, creating a balance between the image and the written word. This interplay is characteristic of the period, where painting and poetry functioned as a unified expression of spiritual practice. The paper shows the natural ageing of a hanging scroll, with the muted tones of the ink contrasting against the light, aged background.
Isshi Bunshu was a significant figure within the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism. His work reflects the aesthetic values of the early Edo period, where the directness of Zen practice influenced artistic production. By stripping away ornamentation, the artist directs the viewer toward the immediate experience of the subject. The work is not merely a portrait but a visual prompt for contemplation. The simplicity of the line work and the focus on a singular, iconic gesture demonstrate the artist's ability to communicate complex philosophical ideas through minimal visual means. This piece remains a clear example of the integration of calligraphy and figurative ink painting in Japanese art history.
