A classical engraving by Johann Theodor de Bry depicting Cupid taming a lion, illustrating the allegorical theme that love conquers all.
This engraving by Johann Theodor de Bry depicts the classical allegory of Omnia Vincit Amor, or Love Conquers All. The composition features Cupid, the Roman god of desire, seated confidently upon the back of a powerful lion. Cupid holds a bow in one hand and a bridle in the other, suggesting his total control over the wild beast. The Latin inscription at the base, Omnia Vincit Amor vel cum domitore leonem, reinforces the theme that love possesses the strength to tame even the most ferocious creatures.
De Bry employs precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to define the musculature of the lion and the soft contours of Cupid. The contrast between the lion's thick, textured mane and the smooth skin of the figure demonstrates the technical skill characteristic of the de Bry family, who were prominent printmakers in the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries. The background remains minimal, focusing the viewer's attention on the interaction between the two figures. Small botanical elements appear in the lower right corner, providing a sense of scale and grounding the scene in a natural setting.
As a work of Northern Mannerism, this print reflects the period's fascination with classical mythology and allegorical narratives. The engraving was likely part of a larger series exploring themes of love, virtue, or moral philosophy. The clarity of the line work and the balanced composition make it a fine example of early modern printmaking. It offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the era, where such prints were collected for their intellectual content as much as their aesthetic quality. The work remains a clear representation of the allegorical traditions that influenced European art during the Renaissance and beyond.
