A classic woodblock print from Hiroshige's Tokaido series, depicting travellers crossing the Okitsu River with a coastal view in the background.
This woodblock print is part of the celebrated series, Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido Road, published by Hoeido. The series documents the journey along the coastal route connecting Edo to Kyoto. In this specific composition, Hiroshige depicts the crossing of the Okitsu River, a common challenge for travellers during the Edo period.
The scene captures a group of porters carrying a passenger in a palanquin through the shallow waters of the river. A second traveller, mounted on horseback, follows closely behind. To the left, a large, craggy rock formation anchors the composition, providing a sense of scale against the open expanse of the bay. In the distance, the horizon is marked by the silhouettes of pine trees and the faint outlines of sails on the water, rendered with the characteristic atmospheric perspective of the artist.
Hiroshige employs a refined colour palette, utilising the 'bokashi' technique to create the subtle gradients in the sky, which transitions from a deep blue at the top to a soft, pale pink near the horizon. The water is depicted with clear, rhythmic lines, suggesting a gentle flow. The figures are rendered with expressive, simplified forms, typical of the Ukiyo-e style, which prioritises clarity and narrative over strict anatomical realism. The print reflects the daily life and travel experiences of the period, offering a glimpse into the logistical realities of traversing Japan's major thoroughfares. The inclusion of the series title and the specific station name in the upper right corner provides the necessary context for the viewer, situating the scene within the broader narrative of the Tokaido journey.
