A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting travellers crossing the Yahagi River bridge at Okazaki with the castle visible in the distance.
This woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicts the Yahagi River at Okazaki, the thirty-ninth station on the Tokaido road. It belongs to the Reisho Tokaido series, a collection produced later in the artist's career. The composition features a wooden bridge spanning the foreground, where a traveller on horseback, accompanied by attendants, makes their way across the water. The scene captures the daily activity of the region, with figures navigating the river on small rafts below.
In the distance, the silhouette of Okazaki Castle rises above the tree line, providing a sense of place. The background is defined by a soft, atmospheric transition of colour, moving from a deep blue sky into a pale horizon. Hiroshige employs a balanced use of space, allowing the river to occupy the centre of the frame while the architectural elements and human figures provide scale and narrative interest. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to combine topographical observation with the stylistic conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition.
The colour palette is restrained, relying on the characteristic blue tones of the period, contrasted with the earthy hues of the bridge and the figures. The lines are precise, defining the structure of the bridge and the forms of the travellers with clarity. This work offers a view into the travel culture of Edo-period Japan, documenting the infrastructure and the movement of people between the major urban centres of the time. As a piece from the Reisho Tokaido series, it reflects the artist's mature approach to the genre, focusing on the interplay between natural features and human presence.
