A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting travellers at the Oiso station along the historic Tokaido road.
This woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai depicts the post station of Oiso, a stop along the Tokaido road that connected Edo to Kyoto. The composition focuses on a large stone monument, the Tora-ga-ishi, which was a well-known landmark for travellers in the region. Hokusai places this stone at the centre of the frame, surrounded by figures in traditional travel attire, including straw hats and carrying packs. The scene captures the daily activity of the road, with pedestrians pausing near the monument.
Hokusai employs a clear, graphic style typical of his earlier print series. The use of flat colour planes and defined outlines creates a sense of order. The palette relies on soft greens, muted ochres, and pale pinks, which provide a sense of balance to the composition. The background features stylised trees and a simple fence, which frame the central subject without distracting from the human activity in the foreground. The print reflects the interest in travel and regional geography that defined the Ukiyo-e genre during the Edo period.
As a master of the woodblock medium, Hokusai demonstrates his ability to organise complex scenes into readable, balanced arrangements. The figures are rendered with economy, their postures suggesting the fatigue and movement associated with long-distance travel. This work provides a glimpse into the social history of Japan, documenting the infrastructure and customs of the Tokaido route. It remains a representative example of Hokusai's approach to genre subjects, where the landscape and the human element share equal importance in the narrative. The print is a fine example of the technical precision achieved by Japanese printmakers of the early nineteenth century, showcasing the collaborative process between artist, carver, and printer.
