A dynamic drypoint and etching by Lovis Corinth, capturing the violent climax of the Odyssey with raw, expressive lines.
This drypoint and etching by Lovis Corinth depicts the climax of Homer's Odyssey, where Odysseus returns to his home in Ithaca to confront the men who have occupied his palace. Corinth, a central figure in the transition from late nineteenth-century academic painting to German Expressionism, employs a frantic, energetic line quality to convey the violence of the scene. The composition is crowded, focusing on the central figure of Odysseus as he draws his bow, surrounded by the chaotic reactions of the suitors.
Corinth's approach to this classical subject matter is far from the restrained, neoclassical interpretations common in earlier centuries. Instead, he utilises loose, gestural marks that suggest movement and psychological tension. The figures are rendered with a sense of urgency, their forms partially dissolving into the surrounding space. This technique reflects the artist's later style, which prioritised emotional immediacy over anatomical precision. The stark contrast between the dark, etched lines and the cream-coloured paper creates a sense of depth, despite the flattened, theatrical arrangement of the figures.
By 1920, Corinth had moved away from his earlier, more polished work, embracing a raw, subjective visual language. This print captures the brutal reality of the myth, stripping away the heroic veneer often associated with the character of Odysseus. The work is part of a broader interest in classical themes that occupied the artist during his final years, demonstrating his ability to reinterpret ancient narratives through a modern, expressive lens. The print remains a clear example of how Corinth used traditional printmaking techniques to explore themes of conflict and human frailty, maintaining a focus on the physical act of drawing as a means of expression.
