Beskrivning
A dreamlike, stylised composition by Henri Rousseau, featuring a nude figure, a bear, and a hunter in a dense forest setting.
Henri Rousseau, a self-taught painter often associated with the Naïve movement, produced this work during the early twentieth century. The composition features a central female figure standing amidst a dense, stylised forest setting. Beside her, a bear sits in a posture that suggests a strange, quiet companionship rather than immediate aggression. To the left, a figure obscured by shadow holds a rifle, adding a layer of narrative ambiguity to the scene. The background reveals a calm body of water under a twilight sky, rendered with the flat, decorative quality characteristic of Rousseau's approach to space.
Rousseau frequently drew inspiration from botanical gardens and illustrated books, rather than direct observation of exotic locations. His method involves a meticulous, almost rigid application of paint, where individual leaves and branches are delineated with precision. This creates a dreamlike atmosphere, where the scale of the figures and the surrounding flora feels detached from conventional perspective. The lighting is uniform, lacking the dramatic shadows found in academic painting of the period, which contributes to the stillness of the image.
This work demonstrates the artist's unique visual language, which prioritised personal vision over technical realism. The juxtaposition of the nude figure with the wild animal and the armed hunter creates a tension that remains unresolved. By avoiding traditional modelling, Rousseau achieves a clarity of form that allows the viewer to focus on the strange, theatrical arrangement of the subjects. The palette is dominated by muted earth tones and deep greens, punctuated by the pale skin of the central figure. It is a representative example of his ability to construct imagined worlds that feel both familiar and entirely alien.

Nude and Bear - Henri Rousseau
Artist Biography
Henri Rousseau
Nicknamed Le Douanier (“the Customs Officer”) due to his job on the outskirts of Paris, Rousseau only began painting seriously at age 40 and retired nine years later to pursue art full time. Though he never left France, his exotic landscapes—lush with oversized foliage and wild animals—were inspired by visits to botanical gardens, illustrated books, and stories from soldiers who had served abroad.
Rousseau believed himself to be a great realist, proudly comparing himself to Picasso. He also pioneered the "portrait landscape" genre, blending figures into rich natural backdrops. Once mocked, Rousseau is now celebrated as a visionary outsider whose work continues to inspire, including references in modern pop culture such as the film Madagascar.
