Nox, or Night, is a masterful engraving by the Dutch artist Hendrick Goltzius. Created around 1588, this work belongs to a series of four prints depicting the times of day. Goltzius, a central figure in the Haarlem Mannerist circle, demonstrates his technical virtuosity through the controlled use of the burin. The composition features the personification of Night riding in a chariot drawn by unseen forces, likely bats, which are depicted in the lower left.

The figure of Nox holds a flaming torch, casting light upon the scene while she travels through the heavens. An owl, a traditional symbol of the night, perches on the side of the chariot. Above, a rooster stands atop the carriage, signalling the approach of dawn. The oval format is typical of the period, framing the allegorical narrative within a contained space. Goltzius employs a sophisticated system of hatching and cross-hatching to model the forms, creating a sense of volume and texture that defines the Mannerist aesthetic.

The iconography is dense with classical references. The small celestial bodies visible behind the figure represent the moon and stars, reinforcing the theme of the nocturnal cycle.
