A sixteenth-century ink and wash drawing depicting the seasonal labours of November, featuring a woodcutter and astrological symbolism.
This drawing, titled November, is attributed to the artist known as Monogrammist JH of JHE. It belongs to a series of works depicting the labours of the months, a traditional theme in European art that connects seasonal agricultural tasks with the passage of time. The composition focuses on a central figure, a woodcutter, who carries a large log across his shoulders while holding an axe. His attire, featuring puffed sleeves and fitted breeches, reflects the fashion of the late sixteenth century.
In the background, the artist includes smaller figures engaged in various tasks, such as clearing brush and preparing timber. The inclusion of a centaur in the upper right corner serves as an astrological reference to the zodiac sign Sagittarius, which corresponds to the month of November. The drawing style employs thin, precise pen lines to define the forms, supplemented by light grey washes that provide volume and shadow to the figures and the surrounding trees. The bare, skeletal branches of the trees suggest the onset of winter, reinforcing the seasonal theme.
This work demonstrates the technical skill of the artist in managing a complex narrative within a single frame. The use of ink and wash allows for a clear distinction between the foreground subject and the more distant activities, creating a sense of depth despite the relatively flat application of the wash. The monogram JH, visible on the axe blade, provides the primary identifier for the artist, whose identity remains a subject of study among historians of Northern European graphic arts. The work provides a glimpse into the daily life and seasonal rhythms of the period, captured with a focus on human activity and the natural environment.
