Frederic Remington produced this work as an illustration for Owen Wister's story, 'The Jimmyjohn Boss', published in Harper's Monthly Magazine in 1905. The scene depicts a Native American man walking through a pueblo courtyard, his solitary figure commanding the centre of the composition. Remington employs a monochromatic palette, relying on the stark contrast between the bright, sun-drenched ground and the deep, sharp shadows cast by the architecture and the figures. This technique creates a sense of heat and stillness characteristic of the American Southwest.
The architectural elements, including the adobe walls and wooden support beams, provide a rigid, geometric frame for the narrative. Remington's training as an illustrator is evident in his precise handling of light and form.
