A Southern Song Dynasty fan painting depicting nomadic hunters on horseback, rendered in ink and colour on silk.
This circular fan painting, attributed to the Southern Song Dynasty artist Chen Juzhong, captures a scene of nomadic life on the northern frontiers. The composition is defined by its expansive, muted background, which suggests the vast, open plains of the steppe. The figures are arranged in small groups, with riders on horseback engaged in the pursuit of falconry. One rider is depicted in mid-gallop, separated from the main party, adding a sense of motion to the otherwise still atmosphere.
Chen Juzhong was active during the early 13th century and served as a painter at the Imperial Painting Academy. His work often focused on the customs of nomadic tribes, a subject that held particular interest for the Southern Song court. The technique employs fine, controlled brushwork to delineate the riders and their mounts, while the surrounding environment is rendered with subtle washes of ink. The circular format, typical of fan paintings from this period, dictates the arrangement of the figures, creating a balanced yet open composition that draws the eye across the silk surface.
This piece reflects the technical precision of the Song period, where the observation of human activity and animal form was highly refined. The muted colour palette, dominated by earthy tones and soft greys, maintains a sense of historical authenticity. The work provides a glimpse into the cultural exchanges and the fascination with frontier life that permeated the artistic output of the era. By focusing on the specific details of the riders' attire and the posture of the horses, the artist conveys the rhythm of the hunt. The negative space surrounding the figures is not merely empty; it functions as an essential element of the composition, evoking the scale of the terrain.
