Noboto at Shimōsa is a woodblock print from the series One Thousand Pictures of the Sea (Chie no umi), produced by Katsushika Hokusai during the 1830s. This series explores the relationship between the Japanese people and the coastal waters, focusing on the daily activities of those who lived by the shore. In this composition, Hokusai depicts the clam-gathering industry at Noboto, a coastal area in the Shimōsa Province.
The scene is organised into distinct horizontal bands. The foreground features a group of workers, their figures rendered with simple, functional lines, as they harvest shellfish from the tidal flats. Their conical hats and bent postures create a rhythmic repetition across the sandy shore. The middle ground transitions to a cluster of thatched-roof dwellings nestled against a grassy, sloping hill. A single boat sails on the calm water, providing a sense of scale and quiet movement.
Hokusai employs a controlled palette, dominated by shades of blue for the water and sky, contrasted with the earthy yellows and greens of the coastal terrain. The use of Prussian blue, a pigment that had recently become available in Japan, allows for the subtle gradations seen in the sky and the depth of the sea.
