No. 40: Suhara - Utagawa Hiroshige

A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige, depicting travellers caught in a heavy rainstorm at the Suhara station on the Kisokaido road.

This woodblock print is part of the series Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido, a collaborative project between Utagawa Hiroshige and Keisai Eisen. The Kisokaido was an inland route connecting Edo and Kyoto, distinct from the coastal Tokaido road. This specific image depicts the station of Suhara during a heavy downpour.

Hiroshige uses a series of diagonal lines to represent the driving rain, a technique he employed to convey atmospheric conditions. The composition is divided between the shelter on the right, where travellers huddle for protection, and the exposed path on the left. Two figures are shown hurrying through the rain, their bodies bent against the elements, while a horse and rider are visible as silhouettes in the distance. The contrast between the static, sheltered figures and the motion of the rain creates a sense of immediate, lived experience.

The colour palette is restrained, relying on muted blues, greys, and earthy tones to suggest the damp, overcast environment. The yellow of the umbrellas and the straw hats provides a visual anchor, drawing the eye to the human activity within the scene. The print demonstrates Hiroshige's ability to capture the specific mood of a location through weather and human interaction.
