Chen Rong, a scholar-official during the Southern Song Dynasty, is widely recognised for his mastery of dragon imagery. This work, a section of the famous handscroll Nine Dragons, demonstrates the artist's command of ink wash techniques. The composition relies on the interplay between light and shadow, using varying densities of ink to suggest the presence of dragons emerging from turbulent clouds and mist.

The dragon, a symbol of cosmic power and water in Chinese culture, is rendered here with dynamic energy. Chen Rong employs calligraphic brushwork to define the serpentine bodies, claws, and facial features of the creatures, while the surrounding atmosphere remains soft and ethereal.
