A traditional four-panel ink and colour painting on silk depicting nine carp swimming through aquatic plants, executed by the Qing Dynasty artist Gong Gu.
This work by Gong Gu, a painter active during the late Qing Dynasty, presents a traditional subject rendered with technical precision. The composition is divided across four panels, creating a sense of movement as the fish navigate through aquatic vegetation. The large, central carp dominates the right side of the frame, its scales and fins depicted with careful attention to ink wash techniques. The smaller fish, positioned to the left, provide a sense of scale and depth, suggesting a larger school moving through the water.
Gong Gu, known for his mastery of traditional Chinese painting styles, employs a muted palette that emphasises the tonal qualities of the ink. The background is kept minimal, allowing the viewer to focus on the forms of the carp and the delicate, calligraphic strokes used to represent the water plants. The use of silk as a medium provides a subtle texture that interacts with the ink, softening the edges of the forms and contributing to the atmospheric quality of the scene.
In Chinese art, the carp is a symbol of perseverance and prosperity, often associated with the legend of the fish swimming upstream to reach the Dragon Gate. This piece reflects the artist's ability to balance representational accuracy with the expressive potential of ink wash. The vertical orientation of the panels is characteristic of hanging scrolls, designed to be viewed in a sequence that guides the eye across the surface. The inclusion of calligraphy on the left panel serves as both a signature and an integral part of the visual balance, grounding the composition within the conventions of literati painting. This print captures the quiet observation of nature, focusing on the fluid motion of the subjects within their environment.
