Beskrivning
A serene woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Niijuku Ferry crossing, featuring a sunset sky and traditional Edo-period architecture.
Niijuku Ferry is a woodblock print from the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. This specific work, numbered 93, depicts a quiet scene along the Nakagawa River. The composition employs a high vantage point, looking down upon the ferry crossing where travellers and a pack horse wait near the water.
The foreground features a teahouse with figures visible inside, framed by slender pine trees that provide a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal expanse of the river. A boat with a large, pale sail glides across the water, while the background reveals a distant mountain silhouette against a sky transitioning from a deep indigo at the top to a warm, glowing orange near the horizon. This use of bokashi, or colour gradation, is a hallmark of Hiroshige's technical approach to woodblock printing.
Hiroshige captures the atmosphere of the Edo period, focusing on the daily rhythms of travel and commerce. The print demonstrates his ability to organise space through the placement of architectural elements and natural forms. The Nakagawa River serves as the primary visual conduit, drawing the eye from the foreground activity toward the distant, hazy horizon. The print is a fine example of the ukiyo-e tradition, which sought to document the changing appearance of the city and its surroundings. The clarity of the lines and the deliberate application of colour reflect the collaborative process between the artist, the carver, and the printer. This work remains a representative example of Hiroshige's late career, showing his mastery of atmospheric perspective and his keen observation of the natural world.
