A woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicting a snowy evening in Kyoto, featuring figures crossing the Shijo Bridge toward the Yamato tea-house.
This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadanobu depicts a winter evening in Kyoto. The composition focuses on the Shijo Bridge, where figures traverse the span beneath umbrellas, shielding themselves from the falling snow. The scene captures the quiet atmosphere of the city, with the Yamato tea-house visible across the water in the Nawate Dori district. Sadanobu, a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking, often documented the specific urban geography of Kyoto, distinguishing his work from the more common Edo-centric subjects of his contemporaries.
The print employs a muted palette, dominated by deep indigo tones for the night sky and the river, contrasted against the white of the snow-covered rooftops. The artist uses a balanced arrangement of architectural elements and human figures to guide the viewer across the bridge and toward the distant buildings. The falling snow is rendered with fine, white flecks, providing a sense of texture and movement against the dark sky. The figures on the bridge are dressed in traditional winter attire, their forms simplified yet expressive, typical of the mid-nineteenth-century Ukiyo-e style.
Sadanobu's work provides a record of Kyoto's appearance during the late Edo period. The inclusion of specific locations, such as the Shijo Bridge and the Yamato tea-house, reflects the popularity of meisho-e, or pictures of famous places, which served as both travel guides and artistic souvenirs for visitors to the city. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the Kamigata printmakers, who often worked with a more refined, subtle aesthetic compared to the bolder prints produced in Edo. This piece remains a clear example of the regional characteristics of the Osaka and Kyoto print traditions.
