A sixteenth-century German pen and ink drawing depicting the biblical meeting between Nicodemus and Christ, rendered in a circular format.
This drawing, attributed to the German Monogrammist CM, depicts the biblical encounter between Nicodemus and Christ, as recorded in the Gospel of John. The composition is contained within a circular frame, a format often used in the early sixteenth century for stained glass designs or small-scale devotional panels. The artist employs a clear, linear style typical of the period, using pen and ink to define the figures and architectural elements, while grey wash provides subtle modelling and depth to the drapery.
Christ is shown on the left, identified by a faint halo, gesturing towards Nicodemus, who sits opposite him. Nicodemus is portrayed in contemporary sixteenth-century attire, including a turban-like head covering, which was a common convention in Northern Renaissance art to suggest the exotic or historical nature of the figures. The interior setting includes a table with a candle and a small altar-like structure, suggesting a domestic or private space for their theological discussion. The artist focuses on the exchange of ideas, with the hand gestures of both figures conveying the intensity of their dialogue.
The drawing reflects the stylistic characteristics of German art from the early 1500s, where the influence of printmaking techniques is evident in the precise handling of line. The work is a study in narrative clarity, prioritising the legibility of the theological encounter over complex spatial arrangements. The circular format suggests it may have been a preparatory sketch for a larger decorative project, such as a roundel for a window or a woodcut illustration. The presence of an inscription at the bottom, referencing the biblical source, confirms the didactic purpose of the image, intended to guide the viewer through the scriptural text.
