Li Shida, a painter active during the late Ming Dynasty, produced this work in 1619. The composition depicts a quiet, rural celebration during the New Year period at Stone Lake. The artist employs a delicate ink-wash technique, characteristic of the Suzhou school, to render the bare winter trees and the modest architecture of the village dwellings. Small figures are scattered throughout the scene, engaged in the quiet activities of the holiday, while a bridge connects the various parts of the village across the water.
The work reflects the aesthetic preferences of the literati class, who valued subtle observation and the quietude of rural life over grand, dramatic subjects.
