A refined surimono woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai, depicting traditional Japanese New Year items and lacquerware with accompanying calligraphy.
This woodblock print by Ryūryūkyo Shinsai belongs to the genre of surimono, which were privately commissioned prints often exchanged among poets and artists in Japan during the Edo period. Unlike commercial prints produced for the mass market, surimono were crafted with high-quality paper and sophisticated printing techniques, such as metallic pigments and embossing, to reflect the refined tastes of their patrons.
The composition depicts a collection of objects associated with the Japanese New Year. A lacquered tray holds a lidded bowl decorated with pine motifs, alongside a small dish and a pair of chopsticks. Behind the tray, a cast-iron kettle sits near a stand holding pine branches and other auspicious items. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper portion of the print indicates its connection to a kyōka poetry circle, where the visual imagery often complemented the themes of the accompanying verses.
Shinsai was a student of Katsushika Hokusai, and his work demonstrates a similar attention to detail and a mastery of the surimono format. The print employs a muted palette, allowing the subtle textures of the lacquerware and the organic forms of the pine to take precedence. The arrangement of the objects is deliberate, creating a sense of balance and stillness. The use of negative space is characteristic of the period, drawing the viewer's eye to the specific items chosen for their symbolic value during the festive season. This print provides a glimpse into the cultural practices of the time, documenting the material culture and aesthetic preferences of the literati class in early 19th-century Japan.
