A photographic study of a traditional Japanese manju-style netsuke, showcasing the minimalist form and smooth texture of the carved ivory toggle.
This image depicts a manju-style netsuke, a traditional Japanese toggle used to secure personal items to a kimono sash. The kimono, lacking pockets, required the wearer to suspend small containers, known as sagemono, from the obi. The netsuke functioned as a counterweight and a decorative fastener.
This specific example takes the form of a manju, named for its resemblance to a round, flat Japanese confection. The object displays a smooth, circular profile with a central button or plug, characteristic of the minimalist aesthetic often found in functional Japanese craft. The material appears to be ivory, which was frequently chosen for its durability and the fine finish it could achieve through polishing. Over time, such pieces develop a warm patina, reflecting their history of use and handling.
Unlike more elaborate netsuke that feature intricate figurative carvings, this piece prioritises form and tactile quality. The design is restrained, focusing on the balance of the circular shape and the subtle contrast between the outer ring and the central element. Such objects were produced by specialised carvers who balanced utility with aesthetic appeal. While many netsuke served as status symbols or expressions of personal taste, the manju type was favoured for its practical shape, which was less likely to snag on clothing than more complex, protruding designs. This print captures the clean lines and material texture of the original carving, offering a study in functional design from the Edo period.
