A poignant etching by Käthe Kollwitz depicting a mother in despair, capturing the harsh realities of poverty through stark light and shadow.
Käthe Kollwitz produced this etching, titled 'Need' (Not), as part of her cycle depicting the plight of the working class in late nineteenth-century Germany. The composition captures a domestic scene of extreme poverty, where a mother sits in a state of exhaustion beside her child. The child lies in a makeshift bed, while the mother rests her head in her hands, a gesture of despair and helplessness. In the background, other figures are barely visible in the gloom, suggesting a crowded and cramped living environment.
Kollwitz utilised the technical possibilities of etching and aquatint to create a stark contrast between light and shadow. The light source, emanating from a small window, illuminates the child and the mother's face, while the rest of the room recedes into deep, murky tones. This manipulation of light directs the viewer's attention to the emotional weight of the figures. The lines are etched with a sense of urgency, reflecting the harsh reality of the subject matter. The texture of the bedding and the rough surfaces of the room are rendered with precise, hatched marks that add to the overall atmosphere of deprivation.
This work belongs to a period in which Kollwitz focused on the social conditions of the urban poor. She avoided sentimentalising her subjects, choosing instead to present the raw, unvarnished truth of their existence. The print demonstrates her technical mastery of the etching medium, allowing her to convey complex psychological states through minimal visual information. By focusing on the intimate, domestic sphere, she brings the viewer into direct contact with the suffering of the individual, rather than presenting a broad political statement. The work remains a powerful example of her ability to translate human experience into visual form through the medium of printmaking.
