A precise architectural study of the St. Odulphuskerk interior, captured by Pieter Jansz Saenredam in 1630.
This drawing by Pieter Jansz Saenredam captures the interior of the St. Odulphuskerk in Assendelft. Executed on 9 August 1630, the work demonstrates the artist's methodical approach to architectural representation. Saenredam was known for visiting church interiors to create precise on-site sketches, which he later refined into finished paintings. This particular study focuses on the structural geometry of the nave and choir, documenting the physical space with clarity.
The composition relies on a rigorous use of perspective to define the volume of the church. Saenredam employs thin, controlled lines to map the arches, columns, and the pulpit, which occupies the left foreground. Unlike many of his contemporaries who added figures to animate their scenes, Saenredam often preferred to depict the architecture in a state of quietude. This allows the viewer to observe the interplay of light and shadow across the whitewashed walls and timber vaulting.
The drawing serves as a record of the Dutch Reformed church interior during the seventeenth century. The absence of elaborate ornamentation reflects the iconoclasm that followed the Reformation, leaving the space austere and focused on the architectural form. Saenredam's technique involves light hatching to suggest depth and texture, maintaining a balance between technical precision and artistic observation. The inscription in the lower right corner confirms the date and location, providing a clear provenance for the study. As a preparatory work, it offers insight into the artist's process, showing how he translated three-dimensional space onto a two-dimensional surface through careful measurement and observation. The print captures the subtle tonal variations of the original graphite, preserving the character of the paper and the artist's hand.
