A detailed 1608 etching by Remigio Cantagallina depicting a fantastical peacock-shaped float from the wedding festivities of Cosimo de' Medici.
This etching by Remigio Cantagallina documents a specific moment during the elaborate festivities held in Florence in 1608. The occasion was the wedding of Cosimo de' Medici, Prince of Tuscany, and Maria Maddalena of Austria. The Medici family frequently commissioned grand spectacles, including mock naval battles on the Arno River, to demonstrate their political power and cultural authority.
Cantagallina, a Florentine artist known for his skill in etching, captured the ephemeral nature of these theatrical events. The print depicts a float designed in the shape of a giant peacock, carrying figures representing the mythological characters Evrito, Echione, and Etalide. The vessel is a prime example of the imaginative engineering and decorative excess characteristic of early seventeenth-century courtly celebrations. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to render the texture of the peacock feathers and the ripples of the water, creating a sense of movement despite the static nature of the medium.
Beyond its function as a record of a specific event, the work provides insight into the intersection of art, politics, and performance in the Medici court. The inclusion of the title and descriptive text at the base of the print follows the conventions of contemporary commemorative publications, which allowed the public to engage with the spectacle long after the event concluded. The composition balances the fantastical form of the peacock float with the more restrained depiction of the surrounding water, reflecting the aesthetic priorities of the period. This print is a valuable document for those interested in the history of festival culture and the development of printmaking techniques in Italy during the early Baroque era.
