A portrait of the Boston silversmith Nathaniel Hurd, painted by John Singleton Copley in the mid-1760s.
John Singleton Copley painted this portrait of the Boston silversmith and engraver Nathaniel Hurd around 1765. At this stage in his career, Copley was the pre-eminent portraitist in colonial America, known for his ability to capture the specific character and social standing of his sitters. Hurd is depicted in a relaxed, informal pose, wearing a banyan, which was a loose-fitting dressing gown popular among gentlemen of the period. His head is covered by a soft cap, suggesting a private moment of study or reflection rather than a formal public appearance.
The composition is grounded by the presence of books on the table before him, which serve as indicators of Hurd's intellectual pursuits and professional status. Copley demonstrates his technical proficiency through the careful rendering of textures, from the sheen of the banyan to the worn leather bindings of the volumes. The lighting is focused, creating a sense of volume and presence that draws the viewer to the subject's direct, steady gaze. The background remains dark and relatively featureless, ensuring that the attention stays fixed on the sitter's features and the subtle details of his attire.
This work reflects the conventions of eighteenth-century portraiture, where the inclusion of specific objects often communicated the sitter's trade or interests. By choosing to portray Hurd in this manner, Copley moved away from the more rigid, aristocratic poses common in European portraiture of the time, opting instead for a more naturalistic approach that suited the sensibilities of the colonial merchant class. The painting remains a significant example of Copley's pre-London period, showing his mastery of oil paint and his keen observation of the human form before he relocated to England in 1774.
