This work by Zhao Mengjian, a scholar-official of the Southern Song Dynasty, exemplifies the literati tradition of ink painting. Zhao was known for his mastery of the 'baimiao' or plain-line technique, which relies on the precision of the brush stroke rather than colour to define form. In this depiction of narcissus, the artist employs varying ink tones to create a sense of depth and movement among the slender, arching leaves and delicate blossoms.
The composition is balanced, with the foliage creating a rhythmic pattern that guides the eye across the paper. The artist uses a calligraphic approach, where each stroke possesses a distinct weight and character.
