A woodblock print from the 1811 'Nangaku-Bunpō Highway Pictures', capturing the daily labour of workers in Edo-period Japan through expressive, minimal brushwork.
This woodblock print originates from the 'Nangaku-Bunpō Highway Pictures' (Nangaku Bunpō kaidō sōga), a collaborative publication by Kawamura Bunpō and his contemporary, Watanabe Nangaku. Published in 1811, this work captures the daily activities of common people along the travel routes of Japan during the Edo period. The print displays a scene of manual labour, where figures are engaged in the task of hanging or drying large textiles, possibly banners or fabrics used in local commerce.
Bunpō, a Kyoto-based artist, is known for his ability to capture movement and human gesture with minimal, efficient brushwork. The composition is divided into two distinct panels, a common format in Japanese illustrated books of the time. The lines are thin and calligraphic, reflecting the influence of the Shijō school, which prioritised a direct, observational approach to the natural world and human activity. The figures are rendered with a sense of spontaneity, avoiding the rigid formality often found in earlier ukiyo-e prints.
The palette is restrained, relying on the natural tone of the paper and subtle ink washes to define form and depth. By focusing on the mundane actions of workers, the artist provides a glimpse into the social fabric of the era. The inclusion of tools, such as the ladder and broom, adds a layer of realism to the scene. This print is an example of the 'giga' or 'sketch' style, which sought to capture the essence of a subject through quick, expressive strokes rather than meticulous detail. It remains a valuable record of the visual culture and daily life of early nineteenth-century Japan.
