A classic nineteenth-century Japanese woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadamasu, capturing the kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan IV in a dramatic role.
This woodblock print by Hasegawa Sadamasu depicts the kabuki actor Nakamura Shikan IV in the role of the fishmonger Aratota. Sadamasu, a prominent figure in the Kamigata school of printmaking based in Osaka, specialised in yakusha-e, or actor prints. These works served as promotional material and souvenirs for theatre enthusiasts, capturing the specific mannerisms and costumes of popular performers during the Edo period.
The composition focuses on the actor's profile, a common convention in kabuki portraiture designed to convey the intensity of the character. The artist employs clean, deliberate lines to define the actor's facial features, particularly the arched eyebrows and the set mouth, which suggest a stern or resolute temperament. The figure wears a patterned garment featuring a fish-scale motif, a visual pun referencing his role as a fishmonger. The use of a subtle green gradient in the background provides a neutral space that allows the blue tones of the costume to remain the visual focus.
Technically, the print demonstrates the precision of the Osaka school, which often favoured a more refined and subtle approach compared to the bolder styles found in Edo. The registration of the colours is exact, and the application of the ink shows the characteristic texture of woodblock printing on washi paper. The inclusion of the actor's name and the role in the cartouche at the top right follows the standard format for theatrical prints of the era. This work provides a glimpse into the aesthetic conventions of nineteenth-century Japanese theatre, where the actor's persona and the graphic design of the print were inextricably linked.
