This woodblock print is part of the series One Hundred Famous Views of Edo, produced by Utagawa Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858. The composition employs a bold, unconventional perspective by placing the hindquarters of a horse in the immediate foreground, effectively framing the street scene beyond. This technique directs the viewer's gaze past the animal and into the bustling thoroughfare of Naitō Shinjuku, a post station on the Kōshū Kaidō road.
The scene captures a moment of transition at dusk. The sky transitions from a deep indigo at the top to a soft, glowing horizon line, suggesting the fading light of day. Below, the street is lined with wooden buildings where figures go about their business. The horse, wearing straw sandals to protect its hooves, occupies a significant portion of the right side of the frame. Its presence provides a sense of scale and immediacy, grounding the viewer in the physical reality of the street.
