A graceful Neoclassical study by Bertel Thorvaldsen, depicting the personification of Night carrying two children, rendered in black and white chalk.
This drawing by the Danish sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen depicts the personification of Night. It is a preparatory study for one of his most recognised relief sculptures. The composition features a winged female figure gliding through the air, carrying two sleeping children in her arms. The children represent Sleep and Death, themes Thorvaldsen explored through classical allegory.
Thorvaldsen uses a restrained palette, typical of his sketches, employing black and white chalk on a toned paper ground. The lines are fluid and calligraphic, capturing the sense of movement as the figure drifts across the frame. The drapery of the woman's garment flows behind her, suggesting the gentle motion of flight. Her expression remains calm and composed, consistent with the Neoclassical ideal of controlled emotion and balanced form. The circular framing device, faintly sketched, hints at the intended final format of the relief.
As a sculptor, Thorvaldsen often used these drawings to work out the spatial relationships between figures before committing to stone. The focus here is on the interaction between the central figure and the children, creating a sense of protection and quietude. The work demonstrates his ability to translate complex mythological concepts into clear, readable visual narratives. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs attention to the graceful posture and the rhythmic arrangement of the figures. This piece offers a glimpse into the creative process of a sculptor who defined the aesthetic standards of his era, showing how he balanced technical precision with a soft, lyrical approach to his subjects. The use of white chalk highlights the forms against the mid-tone paper, providing volume and depth to the figures without the need for extensive shading.
