A classic Dada collage by Kurt Schwitters, featuring layered paper ephemera and commercial packaging from 1923.
Kurt Schwitters, a central figure in the Dada movement, developed his own unique approach to art which he termed Merz. This work, Mz 231. Miss Blanche, is a representative example of his collage practice. Schwitters utilised discarded materials, such as tram tickets, cigarette packaging, and printed ephemera, to construct a new visual reality. By recontextualising these mundane objects, he questioned the boundaries between high art and the refuse of daily life.
The composition is built from overlapping layers of paper, primarily in shades of ochre, tan, and cream. The central elements include a label for Miss Blanche Egyptian cigarettes and a section of a tram ticket from The Hague. These fragments are arranged with a deliberate sense of balance, despite their origins as waste. The typography and graphic elements of the original packaging remain visible, creating a tension between the commercial purpose of the items and their new status as components of a fine art object.
Schwitters began his Merz works in 1919, following the collapse of the German Empire and the subsequent social instability. His practice was a response to the chaos of the era, using the debris of a fractured society to create order. The work is signed and dated by the artist at the bottom, confirming its place within his extensive catalogue of Merz constructions. The muted colour palette, dominated by the aged tones of paper, provides a sense of cohesion to the disparate elements. This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to transform the overlooked into a structured, aesthetic arrangement.
