A study of the classical myth of Diana and Actaeon, rendered in fluid pen and brown ink by the Bolognese Renaissance artist Amico Aspertini.
This drawing by Amico Aspertini depicts the classical narrative of Diana and Actaeon. Aspertini, a Bolognese artist known for his idiosyncratic approach to the Renaissance style, employs a fluid, calligraphic line to construct the scene. The composition is organised around the central figure of Diana, surrounded by her attendants, while the narrative elements of the hunt, including the hounds and the transformation of Actaeon, are distributed across the pictorial space.
The work demonstrates Aspertini's interest in classical antiquity and his tendency toward expressive, sometimes agitated, figure work. The use of brown ink and wash creates a monochromatic effect, allowing the viewer to focus on the gestural quality of the lines and the arrangement of the figures. The figures exhibit a sense of movement, typical of Aspertini's graphic output, where anatomical precision is often secondary to the overall rhythm of the composition.
Aspertini was active in Bologna and Rome, and his work often reflects the influence of the antique sculpture he studied during his travels. This particular sheet captures the artist's ability to condense a complex mythological story into a single, unified visual field. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the piece, revealing the hand of the artist through light washes and quick, decisive strokes. The drawing serves as an example of the preparatory or study-based nature of Renaissance graphic art, where the artist explored themes of transformation and classical lore through rapid, spontaneous mark-making. The composition avoids rigid perspective, opting instead for a more decorative and narrative-driven layout that guides the eye across the various stages of the myth.
