A refined woodcut by Aristide Maillol featuring three women with musical instruments, created during his time with the Nabis group.
This woodcut by Aristide Maillol, titled Music, offers a glimpse into the artist's early career before he turned his focus primarily to sculpture. Produced during his association with the Nabis group in the 1890s, the work displays a decorative quality characteristic of the period. The composition features three women seated in a garden setting, each engaged with musical instruments. The scene is framed by a dense, patterned border that echoes the aesthetic concerns of the Arts and Crafts movement, where the distinction between fine art and decorative design often blurred.
Maillol employs a rhythmic, calligraphic line to define the figures and the surrounding foliage. The treatment of the drapery and the flattened perspective suggest an interest in Japanese woodblock prints, a common influence among his contemporaries. The figures are arranged in a balanced, circular formation, creating a sense of quiet harmony. The background, filled with stylised trees and undulating ground, serves to unify the foreground figures with the decorative frame.
Before his transition to the monumental bronze figures that defined his later career, Maillol worked extensively in tapestry design, painting, and printmaking. This piece reflects that formative period, showing his ability to translate volume and form into a two-dimensional graphic medium. The use of black ink on paper emphasises the graphic strength of the design, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow created by the hatching and cross-hatching techniques. It is a work that captures the atmospheric, dreamlike quality often associated with Symbolist art, while maintaining the structural clarity that would eventually become the hallmark of his sculptural practice.
