This engraving by Hendrick Goltzius depicts the Roman hero Gaius Mucius Scaevola, a figure from early Roman history known for his courage during the siege of Rome by the Etruscan king Lars Porsena. According to the legend, Mucius infiltrated the enemy camp to assassinate the king but was captured. To demonstrate his resolve, he thrust his right hand into a sacrificial fire, allowing it to burn without flinching. This act of defiance so shocked Porsena that he released Mucius and eventually negotiated a peace treaty.

Goltzius, a master of the burin, employs a sophisticated system of swelling and tapering lines to model the musculature of the figure. The anatomy is exaggerated, a hallmark of the Mannerist style, which prioritises expressive form over strict naturalism. The hero stands in a dynamic, contrapposto pose, his gaze directed away from the viewer, while the background provides a narrative summary of the event. In the distance, one observes the small-scale scene of the sacrifice, providing context for the primary figure in the foreground.
