A classic example of the Korean 'true-view' style, this ink painting by Jeong Seon captures the rugged granite peaks of Mt. Inwang with bold, expressive brushwork.
Jeong Seon, a prominent figure of the late Joseon period, is recognised for his departure from traditional Chinese-influenced styles in favour of depicting the actual topography of the Korean peninsula. This work, depicting Mt. Inwang, demonstrates his mastery of the 'true-view' style, which prioritises the specific character of local geography over idealised, generic mountain forms.
The composition is dominated by the massive, rounded granite peaks of Inwangsan, rendered with bold, sweeping ink strokes that convey the weight and texture of the rock. Jeong Seon employs a distinct contrast between the dark, heavy ink used for the mountain faces and the lighter, more delicate washes applied to the surrounding vegetation. Pine trees, a recurring motif in his work, are scattered across the slopes, providing a sense of scale and rhythm to the rugged terrain.
At the base of the mountain, a small pavilion is nestled among willow trees, offering a human element to the vast natural scene. The brushwork here is more restrained, reflecting the quietude of the setting. The artist uses a combination of dry brush techniques for the rock formations and wet, fluid strokes for the foliage, creating a balanced visual experience. The overall effect is one of direct observation, capturing the specific atmosphere of the mountain during a particular season. This piece remains a significant example of the shift toward a uniquely Korean aesthetic in painting, moving away from the rigid conventions of the past to embrace the reality of the local environment. The use of negative space and the careful placement of architectural elements demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of spatial organisation, typical of Jeong Seon's mature period.
