A formal 1771 portrait by John Singleton Copley depicting Elizabeth Lewis, showcasing the artist's mastery of texture and colonial-era social status.
Painted in 1771, this portrait by John Singleton Copley depicts Elizabeth Lewis, the wife of the prominent Boston merchant Ezekiel Goldthwait. Copley was the pre-eminent portraitist in colonial America, known for his ability to render textures and social status with precision. In this work, the sitter is positioned at a table, her hand resting near a bowl of fruit. This inclusion of still-life elements was a signature of Copley's approach, allowing him to demonstrate his technical skill in capturing the sheen of the fruit and the reflective surface of the mahogany table.
The composition is balanced and formal. Elizabeth Lewis wears a dark, lustrous dress with lace trim, set against a blue upholstered chair. Her expression is composed, reflecting the decorum expected of the colonial elite. Copley uses a dark, atmospheric background to push the figure forward, ensuring the focus remains on the sitter's features and her attire. The lighting is controlled, creating soft highlights on the silk of her sleeves and the skin of the peaches in the bowl.
This painting provides a clear view into the material culture of 18th-century New England. The attention to detail in the lace, the fabric of the dress, and the furniture indicates the wealth and social standing of the Goldthwait family. Copley's work during this period remains a primary source for understanding the aesthetic values of the American colonial upper class before he moved to London. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
