A portrait by Sir Thomas Lawrence depicting Sabine Robarts and her son, Charles, rendered with fluid brushwork and a focus on natural interaction.
Sir Thomas Lawrence, a leading portrait painter of the Regency era, produced this work around 1805. The composition depicts Sabine Robarts, Mrs Charles Thellusson, seated outdoors with her young son, Charles. Lawrence employs his characteristic fluid brushwork to capture the textures of the subjects' clothing and the surrounding environment. Mrs Thellusson wears a simple, high-waisted white gown, a style popularised during the period, which contrasts with the bold red suit worn by her son.
The setting is a wooded area, rendered with loose, atmospheric strokes that suggest the dappled light of a late afternoon. Lawrence focuses on the emotional connection between mother and child, with the boy standing beside her while she rests a hand upon his arm. The artist avoids rigid formality, opting instead for a sense of movement and natural interaction. The colour palette is dominated by the stark white of the mother's dress and the striking red of the boy's attire, set against the muted, earthy tones of the foliage and sky.
Lawrence was known for his ability to convey character through subtle facial expressions and posture. In this portrait, he balances the refined elegance of the mother with the youthful energy of the son. The work reflects the conventions of early nineteenth-century British portraiture, where sitters were often placed in natural settings to suggest a relaxed, pastoral ideal. As a master of the Royal Academy, Lawrence influenced many of his contemporaries, and his technique remains a subject of study for those interested in the development of British portrait painting during the transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century.
