Alfred Wallis, a retired Cornish fisherman, began painting in his late sixties. He utilised scavenged materials, often painting directly onto cardboard scraps or old boxes. His work lacks formal training, resulting in a unique visual language that prioritises memory and personal experience over traditional perspective. In this depiction of Mount's Bay, the composition is flattened, allowing the viewer to see the harbour and sea from multiple angles simultaneously.

Wallis employed a restricted palette, relying heavily on white, black, and muted greens. The lighthouses, ships, and harbour walls are rendered with simple, direct lines. The ships appear to float across the surface of the cardboard, their forms simplified into basic shapes. The lighthouses act as markers within the bay, placed according to their relative importance in the artist's recollection rather than their precise geographical coordinates. This approach creates a sense of immediacy and honesty, capturing the essence of the maritime environment rather than a literal representation.

His work was discovered by Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood in 1928, who were drawn to the raw, unmediated quality of his output. Wallis painted what he knew: the boats, the harbours, and the sea that had defined his working life. His disregard for academic rules of scale and depth allows the viewer to focus on the rhythmic arrangement of the vessels and the stark contrast between the dark hulls and the pale, expansive water.
