A delicate graphite sketch by Dutch Golden Age artist Ludolf de Jongh, depicting a soldier on horseback with fluid, expressive lines.
This drawing by Ludolf de Jongh captures a mounted figure in a moment of quiet observation. De Jongh, a Dutch painter active during the seventeenth century, is often associated with genre scenes and portraiture. This sketch demonstrates his ability to render form with economy, using light graphite strokes to define the silhouette of both the horse and the rider. The composition is sparse, focusing entirely on the interaction between the soldier and his mount, with minimal background detail to distract from the central figures.
The artist employs a calligraphic line quality, typical of Dutch sketches from this period, where the weight of the pencil varies to suggest volume and texture. The horse is depicted in a sturdy, grounded stance, while the rider sits with a relaxed posture, his arm extended as if gesturing towards an unseen point in the distance. The paper shows signs of age, with subtle discolouration that adds to the historical character of the piece. Such preparatory works provide a direct link to the artist's process, revealing the initial thoughts that often preceded more finished oil paintings.
De Jongh spent much of his career in Rotterdam, where he became a figure of some standing within the local art community. His work often reflects the interests of the Dutch merchant class, focusing on domestic life, hunting parties, and military subjects. This particular study is an example of the informal nature of seventeenth-century drawing, where the primary objective was the capture of movement and proportion rather than polished detail. It remains a fine example of the period's draughtsmanship, offering a glimpse into the observational habits of a master of the Dutch Golden Age.
