A refined Bunjinga woodblock print by Kameda Bōsai, featuring minimalist ink-wash mountains and elegant calligraphy from the Kyōchūzan album.
Mountains of the Heart, or Kyōchūzan, is a celebrated example of the Bunjinga (literati) style, produced by the scholar and artist Kameda Bōsai. This work originates from a printed album of the same name, which combines poetry and visual art to express the internal state of the scholar. Bōsai was a prominent figure in the Edo period, known for his mastery of calligraphy and his adherence to the ideals of the Chinese literati tradition, which prioritised personal expression over technical realism.
The composition is divided into two distinct panels, typical of the album format. The left panel features a cascading waterfall rendered with minimal, fluid lines, suggesting the movement of water against a quiet, misty backdrop. The right panel depicts rolling hills and small dwellings, grounded by a solitary tree. The use of colour is restrained, relying on soft washes of green and grey to define the forms. This approach creates a sense of space and atmosphere, inviting the viewer to contemplate the scene rather than observe it as a literal representation of a physical place.
Bōsai integrates text directly into the visual field, a hallmark of the Bunjinga aesthetic. The calligraphy functions as a visual element, balancing the weight of the ink-washed mountains and the negative space of the paper. The red seals, or hanko, provide a final point of contrast, marking the artist's identity and the work's provenance. This print reflects the intellectual climate of the time, where the pursuit of artistic refinement was linked to the cultivation of one's inner character. The simplicity of the forms and the deliberate lack of clutter allow the viewer to focus on the interplay between the written word and the painted image, capturing a moment of quiet reflection within the broader context of Japanese art history.
